U.S. scientists counter Bush by demanding smog reductions

U.S. government scientists want to tighten smog standards, a step that would run head-on into U.S. President George W. Bush’s hopes of weaning Americans from gasoline by using more smog-producing ethanol.
Environmental Protection Agency scientists say tougher standards would provide greater health protection for tens of millions of sensitive Americans, including asthmatic children, people with lung disease, outdoor workers, healthy children and elderly adults.
Nearly 160 million people now breathe illegal levels of ozone pollution — smog —mostly in and around major cities in California and the Eastern United States.
