Over the next few days, U.S. President George W. Bush makes his way into hostile territory. And no, it’s not Iraq. Or Afghanistan.
Bush is embarking on a five-nation tour of Latin America, primarily aimed at improving relations in the increasingly left-leaning and anti-American region. During his week-long tour, Bush will visit Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.
He is probably also hoping to mitigate the growing influence of his regional rival, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez who called Bush “the devil” while speaking at the UN last year.
Chavez has been using his new-found energy wealth to be very generous with his neighbours; he’s lent $2.5 billion US to Argentina and offered generous packages to Bolivia and Ecuador. He has said he plans to lead anti-U.S., “anti-imperialist” rallies as Bush travels the region throwing out American aid money as he goes.
