British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell wants Alberta to join a carbon trading market that could involve a large portion of western North America.

Campbell was in Edmonton Friday for a joint cabinet meeting.

The British Columbia premier is working with the leaders of several western U.S. states on the idea of allowing heavy emitters to buy credits from companies that have achieved some success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

OTTAWA – Slap-on-the-wrist penalties and a complete failure to enforce federal labour standards add up to a betrayal of Canadian workers by their national government, the Green Party said today.

“Parking tickets are prosecuted more rigorously than violations of the Canada Labour Code,” said Green Party leader Elizabeth May. “Canada must do more to protect the rights of workers, especially those in non-union workplaces.”

In Fairness at Work, the Federal Labour Standards Review of the Canada Labour Code, Commissioner Harry Arthurs reported that during the past 20 years, not a single prosecution had been launched under Part III of the code, which deals with hours of work, wages, overtime, reprisals and unjust dismissal.

The Green Party is in pole position to make political history by seizing its first ever parliamentary seat.

Analysis of the local election results by The Argus has revealed that Brighton Pavilion could become the first constituency to be represented by a Green MP and that Labour face losing all three seats in the city.

Strong gains by the Greens and the Tories in the council election on May 3 suggest that Labour are on course to lose Brighton Pavilion, Brighton Kemptown and Hove.
