NDP John Fryer Joins Green Party
John Fryer was once the very model of a major New Democrat. A former national and provincial union leader, Fryer ran for the party during the 1988 federal election. But, in an interview with 24 hours’ Public Eye, Fryer confirmed, after more than 40 years as a New Democrat, he joined the Greens this past March.

This part is interesting: “Fryer, who has known May for 30 years, said his defection isn’t a reflection on the provincial New Democrats. But the party’s constitution requires members of that group to also be federal New Democrats.”
I’ve raised the same objection concerning this NDP policy. Provincial parties and federal parties are led by different leaders, have different teams, face different issues and, apparently, walk the talk in different measure.
Several years ago, I went to apply for membership in the federal NDP. On learning that my application would be treated automatically for the provincial party too, I destroyed the application.

I hope you meant that you recyled your application…
There are significant differences between Federal and Provincial parties across the board in Canada, even in the Green Party. Manitoba has been especially confusing, as they not only have a federal and provincial party, they have a ‘Winnipeg’ party as well.
