The Police closed the Live Earth concert series in the U.S. Saturday night with their hit song Message in a Bottle, featuring a cameo by Kanye West repeating the lyric “Sending out an S.O.S” and adding the declaration “We can save the world!”

After more than 24 hours worth of music that began in Sydney, Australia, and ended in East Rutherford, N.J., Live Earth’s main organizer Al Gore urged the public to “put all this energy in your heart and help us solve the climate crisis.”

Environment Minister John Gormley has formally announced he will be battling to become the next Green Party leader.

Already the party’s chairman, the experienced Dublin South-East TD was a central figure in negotiations with Fianna Fail on a coalition pact putting them into power for the first time. Mr Gormley is clear favourite to take the job.

He praised acting leader Trevor Sargent who kept his pre-election promise not to lead the party into a government led by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. “Trevor’s step is a very courageous one. He’s a man of integrity, I think everyone knows that,” he said.

OTTAWA — Two Nova Scotia politicians will likely be happy to see a list of Parliament Hill’s best and worst performers of the past six months, and one may not be.

Politicswatch.com, an Ottawa-based Internet news site, rates Bill Casey and Elizabeth May among the top performers and Peter MacKay among the worst. Mr. Casey is in the top spot because of his vote against the Tory budget, which he says broke the Atlantic accord. Because the Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley MP voted against the budget, he was booted out of the Tory caucus.
