Vancouver-Quadra MP Owen officially resigns
Liberal MP Stephen Owen stepped down Friday, leaving the Vancouver-Quadra seat vacant.
Owen, the Official Opposition critic for democratic reform, first announced his intention to resign on Feb. 5.
He was elected to Parliament in November 2000, and re-elected in June 2004 and January 2006. He served in the cabinets of both Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin.
He will assume his new post as vice-president, external and community relations at the University of British Columbia on Aug. 15.

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made a date to send Quebecers to the polls in two ridings, as his Conservatives look to stir up support in the key political battleground.
Harper announced Saturday that voters in Outremont and Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot will choose new MPs in byelections on Sept. 17.
