GP Radio Survey Underway!
Through the facility of facebook and other media, I have commissioned a survey to ask potential GP Radio listeners what they would like to hear in an internet broadcast designed specifically for them.
History of GP Radio
The first broadcast of GP Radio was May 22, 2007 and new broadcasts were uploaded every week until September 4, 2007. GP Radio hosted the very first live streaming Leaders’ Debate for the Green Party of British Columbia. GP Radio also helped to promote the Green Party of Ontario during its provincial election and the Yes to MMP campaigns in September 2007. This campaign was the first time that GP Radio broadcasts were available from multiple websites.
The GP Radio concept has enjoyed success over its short history:
1. Building an active audience listener base,
2. Soliciting input for small ‘g’ ideas from thinkers all over the world and offering a venue for Greens to discuss ideas and building relationships with the arts and science communities.
3. Promoting small ‘g’ green ideas, from e-voting to morphable materials.
In addition, GP Radio has provided a venue for the interaction of the Green Party with non-partisan groups, enabling the exchange and test marketing of ideas.
The New GP Radio: Greater Reach, Anytime, Anywhere
With the advent of new technology, it is now possible to provide a streaming audio broadcast 24 hours per day and available on any number of audio streaming devices. In addition, this technology enables the possibility of ‘live to air’ broadcast – that is, doing an interview with someone that immediately can be heard by listeners tuned into the station. This would enable GP Radio to function in many respects like a conventional radio station.

Thanks for the input Mike. So if I started a site, you’re thinking that it would be cool music with live coverage of events as they unfold.
Hmm… Interesting.

my answers:
1. I don’t listen to radio over the internet. If there were ways to do it, I am sure I would listen to it, but not much.
5. Listen to radio call-in shows occassionally. CBC has some good content, for sure.
6. Live coverage of events…yes, mostly on TV, I am a really visual person that way.
(was quite transfixed by some of the Democratic and Republican primary debates that way, for a while)
7. Coverage of events pertinent to the local community - my interest in this is increasing and my local community would be Ottawa, Centretown, since this is where I live and hang my hat ,so to speak
8. I WOULD enjoy listening to panel shows, that is panel discussions by people who really have something to say. Something along the lines of Mike Duffy live, with a green twist, a green perspective (but still rooted in the real world, not this wishy-washy stuff).
9. This point is not very important to me.
10. I would most like to hear the following two people in an interview: Amory Lovins and Douglas Cardinal. Amory LOVINS because he is such an eco-visionary and has so much to say on topics of research, building and engineering of the world around us, and Douglas Cardinal because he is the greatest living Canadian architect - and his most famous work, the Museum of Civilization embodies so many ideas and imagery, not to mention techniques, that are in the forefront of the post-industrial age.
11. Blues, classic rock, some classical orchestral pieces.

So, in order for the show to be something you’d listen to, you would want the focus to be on solid content with a very peripheral connection with green.

The Survey
Part I
1. Do you listen to the radio over the internet? If yes, list what stations/sites you listen to. If no, skip to question 5. Yes
2. Where do you listen to the radio? Home mostly, car, friends places and of course from my computer.
3. What kind of content do you listen to on internet radio? Music, some spoken word and CBC sometimes
4. When do you listen to internet radio? On Sundays because they have archived shows from a university station called CKUW and my Fiends have a show on that day. I love CKUW
Part II
If you were planning to take time to listen to an internet radio station, how would you rate the following content:
5 – Very interesting – would make time to listen
4 – Interesting
3 – Not sure / no opinion
2 – Boring
1 – Terribly boring/annoying – would avoid listening
My answer would be very interesting.
1. Interviews with small ‘g’ green thinkers: scientists, politicians, philosophers, activists, etc. Yes, as long as long as the topic discussed were canada based and local issues based.
2. Interviews with small ‘g’ green businesspeople: investors, futurists, entrepreneurs, engineers etc. Yes that would be cool to hear what business people are doing to protect the environment.
3. Interviews with small ‘g’ artists: musicians, painters, videographers, actors, directors, etc. Yes, as long as they supported the environment Like Raffi, Bruce Cobrun and Joni Mitchel they musicians could play songs during the broadcast as well.
4. Interviews with prominent Green Party people from Canada and around the world. Yes, I would like them as well. Maybe the green party leader in germany, Ireland, England and New Zealand
5. Radio call in shows like CBC’s Cross Country Check Up. Definitely need call in shows. One that get people to call in with different opinion. Hosted by the same person at a weekly set time.
6. Live coverage of events as they unfold. Yes, it would be good it have live updates on provincial and federal elections with commentary based on green votes so people can here how they are doing. Especially in Ontario, BC, and Alberta but any province could be covered. With live interviews of the party leaders as well after an election or during it as well.
7. Coverage of activities local to your community. Yes go for it. Manitoba issues could be brought up. Like the transmission line debate here in the province manitoba. Get people with different views together and have a debt.
8. OPEN QUESTION: What other program content would you enjoy listening to?
I would love to see a weekly panel show with three guessed on a single green topic or other topic does not matter to me. It would have the same host and would allow caller to call in and ask question, make comments or what every they wanted to say.
9. How important is it for you to have green oriented radio programming accessible through your computer? Not very important but I think if there was a station where different Green parties could advertise different events/ideas it would be great. Also I would like to see it on the radio waves all across canada and on-line live if possible.
10. Who is the person you would most like to hear from in an interview?
David Suzuki, Elizabeth May, Adrian Carr, Head Director of Western Canada Wilderness Committee and other people in environmental groups that are currently in the news.
11. What kind of music do you enjoy? Older music, Rock/pop. anything really that sound good.
PS. I would like to see an archive system to house the past show so people can download them and listen to the later. CKUW in Winnipeg does it and I love it.
Hope the station will be great. Your other shows were great we need more of it to be heard.
