On Monday, the clamorous animal rights group PETA announced it would award $1 million to the first person to come up with a way to make commercially viable in vitro meat by 2012. The fake meat would have to be indistinguishable from the real deal, according to competition rules, and it would have to be cheap enough to succeed in the marketplace.

In theory, this seems like an excellent idea, with the potential to ease the burden on the environment from meat production, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve human health. In practice, however, the chances of anyone actually winning the prize seem slim. “No one has yet produced [in vitro meat]. No one has succeeded in coming close,” says Dr. Stig Omholt, director of Norway’s Centre for Integrative Genetics and chair of the In Vitro Meat Consortium, which held its first symposium this month. Green Party of Canada Kamloops candidate Donovan Cavers is putting his money where his mouth is and fulfilling campaign promises whether or not he gets elected.

Cavers and friends are cooking a four-course, 100-mile meal for 40 environmentally friendly eaters next Friday.

The party fundraiser is exclusively organic and all ingredients are produced within 100 miles of the dinner, which will be held in Barnhartvale.

“I’m just trying to raise awareness about the local food that’s available, inspire local people and support local farms,” said Cavers, noting food security is important, especially as the price of fuel rises.

Here in New Zealand we have just had one of our political parties, the Greens (called such due to their affiliation with eco-friendly policy) to have all foods labelled with their country of origin.

I for one a  quite keen for this move, especially in the areas of meat products and fresh produce.

I also feel its important to be given more power of choice, and the consumer the power to vote with their wallet.

I do understand that many people don’t particularly care about the country of origin of their food, and many foods carry their country of origin as a badge of honour.

The Australian Green Party has taken another step back from positions adopted earlier this decade calling for the regulated distribution of marijuana and other “social drugs,” such as ecstasy. For the first time, the party has made its opposition to drug legalization part of its drug policy platform.

Just to make the party’s retreat crystal clear, the opposition to legalization is the first item in the Green drug policy platform: “The Australian Greens do not support the legalization of currently illegal drugs,” the plank bluntly states.
