After an embarrassing day for the Quebec Provincial Police, where they first denied and then confirmed they had undercover officers acting as protesters at the ‘Three Amigos’ summit in Montreal last weekend, many questions still linger.

At a news conference scheduled by the QPP to answer questions regarding their behavior on Friday afternoon, Inspector Marcel Savard defended the three and insisted they were not there to provoke demonstrators.  He also says one of the officers was given a rock by protesters but the officer had no intention of using it.

After originally denying it, the force has admitted the trio was involved in the protest after a video clip of the them showed up on the popular website, YouTube.com. But the provincial police are denying they were attempting to provoke protesters into violence and say the three officers were planted in the crowd to locate any protesters who were not peacefully demonstrating.

Members of Halifax’s protest movement called Monday for an inquiry into police actions at a Quebec protest last week.

The Council of Canadians, Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, Halifax Peace Coalition and Ecology Action Centre were accompanied by the NDP and Green Party of Canada in calling for Ottawa to investigate why police officers infiltrated a protest of the Security and Prosperity Partnership and were seen inciting violent behaviour.

Ottawa - Green Party leader Elizabeth May today demanded a full investigation into the three masked men who posed as protesters and tried to incite a riot during this week’s peaceful demonstration at the Security and Prosperity Partnership summit in Montebello, Quebec.

“Canadians have a right to know who these men are, whose orders they were following, who knew about this tawdry operation and what they hoped to achieve,” said Ms. May.

“This is a blatant assault on our Charter-protected right of peaceful assembly and it cannot just be shrugged off with the bland official denials issued yesterday.

Ottawa has approved a plan to search for an underground storage site to permanently dispose of nuclear waste, Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn announced Thursday.

“It’s important that we set up permanent, long-term, safe, secure storage that’s going to ensure the protection of the environment,” Lunn said.

Canada’s nuclear reactors produce about 85,000 bundles of spent fuel a year. Currently, the waste is dipped into giant pools to cool off for about a decade, then stored in titanium containers.
